A grove of trees all dressed up in their best spring green finery.
I went to the mainland this past weekend to attend a friend’s birthday party, which entailed getting up very early Friday morning to catch the first ferry off island. Normally when I take this ferry, I buy a cup of tea, find a seat in the most out-of-the-way corner, and hunker down for the two-hour journey. But this day, the pre-sunrise clouds were hanging low and misty over the islands, luring me out on deck to try to capture the mood of a winter morning in the Pacific Northwest. I added a little intentional camera blur to match the state of my half-awake brain.
I took this photo at the end of last month, after a day of stormy weather. The sun finally broke through the clouds just before it sank below the horizon.
An abstract interpretation of a balmy summer evening sunset.
An abstract rendition of a vine maple’s delicate spring hues.
I’m “off the grid” until the end of the week and will respond to any comments then. Thanks for looking!
Recently I’ve been experimenting with images of water reflections, loosely inspired by impressionist artist Claude Monet’s water lilies series. This particular photo was taken in a wetlands area where bits of grass and leaves in the water broke up the reflection of trees and sky, resulting in a somewhat dreamlike, ambiguous image.
The other day I happened to look out the window to see the sun finally breaking through the heavy fog that had been hanging around all morning. I’ve kind of moved away from using the “intentional camera movement” technique lately (it can be frustratingly unpredictable!), but decided to try it for this shot to create an abstract image. The resulting blend of light, shadow and reflection created an almost metallic effect which I quite liked.
A couple of weeks ago before the big storms blew all the leaves away, this little tree was putting on an outstanding solo performance by the side of the road. The backdrop of dark evergreens provided a perfect foil for its bright yellow foliage.
