These three fir trees grow at the side of the path to the beach, and I’ve passed them many times without taking particular notice. But on this day the soft winter sun seemed to shine on them just right, highlighting the detail in the trunks while drawing out the pastel tones of the woodland foliage.

I took these shots a few days ago. The big windstorm and subsequent heavy rains have stripped the deciduous trees around our place, but further inland the leaves are mostly still hanging on.
In spring the deciduous trees tend to steal the show with their burst of leafy finery, but these fir trees are also sporting some new green.
Recently I’ve been experimenting with images of water reflections, loosely inspired by impressionist artist Claude Monet’s water lilies series. This particular photo was taken in a wetlands area where bits of grass and leaves in the water broke up the reflection of trees and sky, resulting in a somewhat dreamlike, ambiguous image.

The longer I live here on the island, the more I become familiar with its backroads and trails. I have stumbled across all kinds of paths that criss-cross from one location to another. Many aren’t marked on any map, nor have signage indicating where they lead, so following them is always an adventure.
