I think dragonflies are the coolest insects.

Their wings are like stained glass works of art, their eyes are engineering marvels of nature but have an endearing cartoonish quality, and their aerial acrobatics are amazing to watch. Plus they eat mosquitoes. What’s not to like?

Some are brilliantly coloured. This is a cardinal meadowhawk.

This one is a blue dasher.

Other dragonflies are more subdued in colouring (I think this is a female blue-eyed darner). Look how she’s checking me out.

Tell me this isn’t the cutest little face.
