Every year I look forward to the return of the dragonflies. I find them beautiful, as well as fun and challenging to photograph.
It helps that they are so abundant here on the island. Right now a half dozen blue-eyed darners are patrolling my back yard for mosquitoes and other prey. They’ve always been the most challenging to photograph as it is hard to find one at rest, never mind get near it without scaring it off. At the lake a few kilometres up the road, cardinal meadowhawks, eight-spotted skimmers, and blue dashers are numerous and don’t seem to mind being photographed, as long as you approach them calmly and slowly.
